FAQ

1. What is tallow and why is it used in skincare?

Tallow is rendered suet (fat) from cattle. Because its fatty acid profile closely resembles the natural oils in human skin, it can help support hydration and strengthen your skin’s barrier by sealing in moisture. It’s rich in bio-compatible fats and fat-soluble vitamins.

2. What makes Backwood Bougie’s tallow different?

We use 100% grass-fed and grass-finished suet from cattle with superior genetics raised on spray-free pastures at Brown Pearcy Cattle Company. Our animals are not given routine vaccines or unnecessary chemicals, and we control the rendering process to keep our tallow clean, nutrient-rich, and truly whole-animal. This means the tallow in our skincare is as pure and high-quality as you’ll find.

3. What are the benefits of using tallow on skin?

Tallow’s fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) help condition and moisturize skin in a way that mimics the skin’s own lipids. This can help reduce dryness, support a healthy barrier, and keep skin feeling soft and supple. Some people also find tallow soothing on dry patches or rough areas.

4. Is tallow good for sensitive skin?

Many people with sensitive or easily irritated skin choose tallow because it is naturally simple and free of synthetic chemicals. A nutrient-rich, minimal formula can be very soothing for dry, reactive skin. As always, we recommend a patch test when trying any new product.

5. Can tallow help with conditions like eczema or rosacea?

Many Backwood Bougie customers use our products on dry, flaky, or irritated skin, as tallow’s moisturizing properties can be comforting. Some people with eczema or rosacea symptoms report reduced irritation when using tallow-based balms. There is anecdotal support for this, but research is still limited and results vary person to person.

6. Is tallow safe for acne-prone or oily skin?

Tallow can be rich and occlusive, which helps lock in moisture — but that same richness may not be the best fit for oily or acne-prone skin. If you are concerned about breakouts, start with a small patch test and apply sparingly. Everyone’s skin is different.

7. Will tallow clog my pores?

Tallow’s fatty acids can be deeply nourishing, but for some people it may feel heavy — especially in large amounts or on oilier skin types. We always recommend patch testing first to see how your skin responds.

8. Can men use Backwood Bougie products too?

Absolutely — tallow works well on all skin types and is not gender-specific. Its deep moisturizing properties make it a great option for hands, elbows, heels, face, or anywhere that needs nourishment.

9. Are Backwood Bougie products fragrance-free?

We do not use synthetic fragrance in any product. Some items have a natural aroma from real organic ingredients or pure essential oils like vanilla bean or raw honey, but nothing artificial.

10. Do you test on animals?

No. We do not test our products on animals.

11. How long will a jar last?

Because tallow is so concentrated, a little goes a long way. Most people find a 2 oz jar lasts a couple of months, depending on how often you use it.

12. How should I store Backwood Bougie products?

Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Because our products are natural and handcrafted, heat may soften them — but this doesn’t affect performance.

13. Can I use tallow in place of a moisturizer?

Yes! Many people use our balms on their face as part of a simple, minimal routine. Just start with a small amount to see how your skin responds.

14. Are your products safe for babies or toddlers?

Our products are crafted simply with clean, intentional ingredients. Some families choose to use them on children’s dry or sensitive areas. Always patch test and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

15. Do you ship internationally?

No — we currently only ship within the U.S.

16. What is your return/refund policy?

We want you to be happy with your purchase. If you’re not satisfied, contact us within 7 days of receiving your product and we’ll help make it right.
